Every December, families across the world gather around one of the most recognizable symbols of the holiday season — the Christmas tree. The tradition began in Germany more than 400 years ago, when people decorated evergreen trees with candles, fruit, and small ornaments to celebrate life and hope in the middle of winter. Immigrants later brought the tradition to the Americas, where it became an important part of Christmas celebrations.
Today, the United States sells around 25 to 30 million real Christmas trees each year, and more than 350 million trees are growing on farms across the country. Beyond being beautiful, the Christmas tree represents togetherness, generosity, and joy — values that also reflect the spirit of South El Monte High School’s baseball team.
This year, the South El Monte Eagles baseball program is hosting its annual Christmas Tree Fundraiser to support its athletes. Players, coaches, and parents will sell fresh, high-quality trees to help raise money for new equipment, uniforms, and resources that keep the team strong.
Head Coach Mr. Gonzales said the fundraiser is about more than money. “Our program has always been built on community,” he explained. “When you buy a tree from our players, you’re not just helping them on the field — you’re joining a tradition that brings people together.”
For many families in South El Monte — especially those with Mexican, Salvadoran, and other Latin roots — the Christmas tree has become part of a beautiful mix of old and new traditions. In Latin America, the Nativity scene (el nacimiento) has always been the heart of Christmas. Over time, families began placing a decorated tree beside it, blending faith and festivity. In places like El Salvador and Mexico, trees are often covered in handmade ornaments, ribbons, and bright colors that reflect the joy and warmth of the season.
In that same spirit, the Eagles’ fundraiser connects faith, family, and teamwork. The baseball program is one of the most successful sports programs on campus, known for its discipline, pride, and unity. Fundraisers like this help continue that legacy and remind students that success grows when a community supports its own.
Tree sales are on now, and orders can be made through any South El Monte baseball player or by visiting the South El Monte Christmas tree website.
So this year, when you decorate your Christmas tree, remember that its roots reach across history and cultures — and now, right into the heart of South El Monte.
Buying your tree from the Eagles doesn’t just brighten your home; it strengthens the spirit of our community.
