Who’s an underrated teacher at South El Monte High School? I have an answer: it would be the Spanish teacher Mr. Lopez. He is a very charismatic and positive teacher here at South El Monte High School. Mr. Lopez has inspired and motivated many students including myself to become focused on their education in order to achieve their lifelong goals.
Mr. Lopez went to Citrus College where he received his AA degree. Shortly after he went to Cal Poly which he says was a mistake because they didn’t have the major he wanted to take. So, he only spent a single semester at this college. Eventually, Mr. Lopez earned his bachelors degree in Spanish-American literature from Cal State Los Angeles. When asked when he knew he wanted to become a teacher he first said “I originally wanted to become an architect but I enjoyed being in school and being a student-athlete so much I wanted to come back to coach Cross Country and Track.” From there he realized that being a teacher was much better and he found his new life passion.
When asked about his favorite hobby he says “I love to run. I also enjoy traveling for the college board but that isn’t as much of a hobby as running is.” An interesting fact that some people may not know is that Mr. Lopez is a member of the prestigious AP college board. This national organization only allows the brightest and most talented educators to become members. One of the benefits of being on the college board is that he gets to travel to different states. He also gets to go to different schools and educate students on the importance of college and the critical steps they will need to face to get there. Mr. Lopez has a few different favorite things about this school, however, his favorite in general would be teaching and his students. Specifically, the students that are in his classes. He exclaims “I like to make an impact on my students.” He knows what they need, which is some tough love because that’s what keeps them motivated to reach their goals. He says “This new school year is so far my favorite. I can tell it’s going to be a good year, I can feel it.”
Overall, Mr. Lopez has made a large impact on his current and past students. After learning more about one of my favorite teachers here at South I think we should all take some time to thank Mr. Lopez. So, if you see him in the hallway give him a high five or stop and talk to him. I am certain that he will not only make you smile but also change your life for the better.
