Godzilla and King Kong are at it again but this time they are teaming up to fight a common enemy in the newly released Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The movie premiered at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in LA and people had a lot to say about it. This new addition to the Godzilla and King Kong Monsterverse movie is getting mixed opinions, some saying it stayed true to the franchise. In contrast, others said it focused too much on the humans in the movie instead of the monsters.
The ones who enjoyed the movie would say that they focused more on the monsters than on the other movies and stayed true to the series. The article “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Overdoes it All” by Charles Pulliam-Moore states “They stayed “true” to the franchise in a way that made them sit comfortably alongside Japanese films like Godzilla Minus One”. It also mentions “The humans in Monsterverse films have never been particularly compelling, but in The New Empire, their thinness is reflective of the fact that they’re really the supporting characters. Godzilla and Kong are the stars here.”.
I would say that lots of people enjoyed the movie as it had a budget of $135 million while it made a total of $547.2 million worldwide passing Gareth Edwards’ “Godzilla” which made $529 million. The addition to the franchise has now passed Kung Fu Panda 4 which came out on March 8th and grossed $480.3 million. I asked Nancy a junior in South El Monte Highschool who watched the movie how she felt about the new addition to the Monsterverse series and she said “I really enjoyed
watching it i thought it was a cool addition to the series it was mostly about Godzilla and King Kong which I liked.” I also asked her if she would recommend others to watch the movies, “ Yes, they should definitely watch it especially if they have already watched the other movies.”.
There have been 11 other movies not including the TV series they have created, making you think about how they will compare to the others or how they will continue the storyline they have already created. In other movie series you could see people saying they shouldn’t make too many sequels cause they ruin movies but for the Godzilla and Kong movies they seem to not mind. The reviews haven’t said anything about the sequel being a bad addition to the movie series either. We don’t know if they will continue adding more films to the franchise but we do know that Apple TV+ announced they are going to continue the MonsterVerse with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season two which is their series on the Monsterverse. Apple TV+ has also announced it is looking into other story pitches for potential future spin-offs. The last question I asked Nancy was if they should add more movies to the franchise which she responded “ I think its cool that they are continuing the movie series but I think that if they continue with adding more movies they could get to the point where they ruin the storyline.”.
