Not all teachers can make an impact on their student’s lives. Mr. Heileman has been in the hearts of many students these past few weeks. We all have individual stories with him over the years and how he has affected our mindset, but let’s talk about what’s happening now. The amazing Mr. Heileman will be back to teach again and here’s his story.
Mr. Heileman had gone on a field trip to MOCA on October 17 2024 when he began to feel pain in his abdomen. “The next day I was admitted to the Kaiser Permanente, Baldwin Park with ruptured severe appendicitis”. While we students thought that was it Mr Heileman was still suffering not knowing the true reason. “The appendicitis was soon thought to be Crohn’s Disease. My surgeon decided to operate and remove a significant obstruction in the Terminal IIleum, where the small intestine meets the colon.” During this time Mr. Heileman was still continuously trying to update us till we had a long pause. “The samples that came back from the lab showed poorly differentiated, widespread adenocarcinoma with prominent signet ring morphology. Stage 4.” Now going Into Chemo Mr. Heileman hopes it will help ease the pain from the past surgery.
Mr. Heileman came in before break to say farewell to his South El Monte High School students. Every teacher has their outlook on students Mr. Heileman has looked at every one of us as bright students with successful futures. He spoke to his 7th period and said “I am happy to see your faces every day, Most teachers complain to see their students every day but I love my 7th period.” After school the number of students that came to see Helieman was phenomenal. As of right now, he will not be returning for this semester to spend time with his family he hopes to return in the future. At the end of this article, I will include the link to the Caring Bridge which is where you will find more information on Mr. Heileman’s situation and can send him and his family prayers.

Mr. Heileman was one of my first teachers I had as a freshman and he was a very kind and optimistic person. I remember him encouraging my visions when we did our photography unit and how he gave me ideas on what I can do to improve my photos. While I only knew him for a year, a lot of the things he taught me in that class still stick with me to this day and I will be forever grateful for what an amazing teacher he was.

It was so sad to know that this article was supposed to be about him getting better and even coming back. But it’s so hard to know that he is gone this honestly shows that everything can happen so fast. Mr. Heileman was a good teacher and now it hurts to not see him outside of class and greet his students.

Mr Heileman was an amazing teacher he always updated us on his condition when he ended up getting sick. I remember going on that field trip with Mr Heileman I noticed that he was moving very uneasy and at some point I asked him if he was okay he responded with “I’m okay Hugo I’m just getting a little tired” I told him to get a drink and to take a seat because it was lunch It never would have crossed my mind and to think of what was happening to him internally. He was an amazing teacher it is unfortunate that he passed away last week on Thursday Morning February 6th 2025.
Fly high Mr Heileman you will be missed
