Miss Lei is a new teacher here at South El Monte High School. She has been subbing since 2018, and has recently become a teacher in 2022. When asked why she wanted to become a teacher Miss Lei responded and said, “Growing up I needed to help my parents translate. I always wanted to help people who did not speak English, or whose native language is not English to help them have an easier life in America.” This has made her want to help students who don’t speak English so they won’t struggle or have trouble later on in life. She wants to make student’s lives easier, and be able to help as much as she can while being a teacher.

While being new to this district, Miss Lei has had a memorable year. “During one class, one student said it’s more boring when we don’t do anything, and it made me happy because I feel my lessons are engaging,” Miss Lei said. Teaching at the high school level for Miss Lei has been very enjoyable. She said, “I enjoy the literature and prefer working with older students because they have more to add to a conversation.”

Throughout Miss Lei’s experience as a teacher, she has given many students advice. Miss Lei said, “Believe in yourself, you’re the most important person in your life. If you don’t believe in yourself then you won’t believe that others believe in you.” This might help students in the future to believe and have confidence in themselves because not everyone will believe in you. Students should have a strong mentality to be able to grow.

When asked Miss Lei what is something no one knows about her she said, “I was not a good student in high school, and my grades were bad. I failed classes, but after high school, I got more serious and focused.” This shows that it doesn’t matter where you start but how you finish. As a teacher Miss Lei feels that her strengths are “relating well to the students, easy going, and flexible when students get bored by changing things up.” Miss Lei has had a great year so far as a new teacher at SEMHS, and enjoys working with her colleagues and students.
