On Thursday, February 17, 2022 the Lady Eagles Varsity Softball Team played a home non-conference game against Schurr High School at 3:15 p.m. The Lady Eagles were fresh off a 12-9 win against Rowland High School that occurred just 2 days prior on Tuesday, February 15, 2022. Both teams looked ready to play and extremely eager during their pre-game festivities.

The game started off quick as Schurr quickly took the lead during the top of the 1st inning with a score of 2-0. The lady Eagles didn’t respond to those 2 runs, or the 3 runs scored by Schurr in the next inning. We started off slow, but by the 4th inning, we were awake and clawing back at a chance to make a comeback.

After about the midpoint of the game, which would be the 4th inning the score was 5-1 in favor of Schurr. Although the score wasn’t in favor of the Lady Eagles, they still weren’t willing to give up as they were still attempting to make a comeback and take the  win. Unfortunately for South El Monte, the effort from the Lady Eagles wasn’t enough as they ended up losing the game with a final score of 14-5. The game was capped off with a 9 run 7th inning for Schurr which sucked all the momentum out of the Lady Eagles.

“We started off slow in the beginning but later into the game, our bats began to wake up. It was an extremely exciting game until the 7th inning where our momentum disappeared” said Senior shortstop Aniah Castruita. In addition, she also said, “Overall, it was a great learning experience for us to get ready for league.”

Sophomore Jocelyn Lopez (#22) was named the player of the game for South El Monte. She went 2-4, with 2 doubles (2B) scoring 1 run, and having 1 RBI. Although the Lady Eagles came up short, it was still nice to have a player like Jocelyn who tried her best to lift and carry her team to a win.

The Lady Eagles softball team looked to leave this game in the past as they began to prepare for their next game on Thursday, February 24th against Paramount High School. Our Lady Eagles did in fact get the job done against Paramount High School, as they came away with a 14-10 W. As of right now South El Monte Softball sits with a record of two wins and one loss (2-1).
