South El Monte High School has many exceptional students, but Aden Gonzalez is a remarkable person who shines through. He is a 15-year-old sophomore who has already made many marvelous achievements at such a young age.
One of his most incredible qualities is his amazing ability to stand out in band and music. An accomplishment that is the most recognizable was the opportunity he earned to perform at the Rose Bowl Pasadena Parade in the band. This prestigious opportunity for marching band students to perform on a national stage, showcasing their musical talent and marching abilities to a massive audience on New Year’s Day, essentially signifying a high level of achievement within the marching band community. It’s a highly sought-after experience due to the parade’s iconic status and nationwide viewership. Only 225 out of 500+ students who audition make it onto the top-tier team.
Other than making it on the high-profile parade, he has been constantly involved in the school’s marching band. He has been in band since middle school. Being in band is important as it fosters collaboration, creativity, and personal growth. It teaches teamwork as members because they rely on one another to create cohesive and harmonious music. Playing in a band also boosts communication skills, helps develop discipline through practice, and provides a sense of community. For many, it becomes a safe space to express emotions and build lasting friendships. Overall, being part of a band allows individuals to enhance their musical talents while learning valuable life skills.
I had the opportunity to interview the gifted and talented prodigy. I first asked him how he’d had an exciting year, but what was he most proud of? He responded, “I’m most proud of my accomplishments in having the privilege to participate in the 2025 Rose parade with the PCC honor band and Herald trumpets.” Aden explained to me how important it was to be part of this high-standard group.
I also spoke with Mr. Morales, the director of South El Monte’s Marching Band, about Aden. I asked him what set Aden apart from the rest of his students and he said, “What sets Aden apart from the rest of the band is his dedication to taking advantage of every musical opportunity that is available through our school. He is willing to play just about any brass instrument and is a part of the drumline.” This is a prime example of how astonishing he is.
We hope to continue seeing him thrive through his challenges and see his accomplishments. Anything is possible when you put your mind to it.
