Finding a more fierce competitor than Alexis Rodriguez at South El Monte High School is nearly impossible. Alexis is not only dominant on the softball field but on the gridiron as well. This season she dominated the flag football scene with 38 touchdowns and close to 3,000 yards passing. “Not only is she a great leader on the field, but she is also a great person and teammate”. This is how her coach Mr. Michael Gonzlez describes Alexis.
“You have to be coachable”. This is what Alexis thinks is one of the keys to success. She credits her grandfather and father for her athletic ability. They both played baseball at a competitive level. Alex loves how “…sports distract from reality”. According to Alexis life is not easy and sports have taught her that “nothing is guaranteed” and that her sports “family” helps her get through tough times.
Life has not been easy for Alexis. She has had to handle some adversity. Perhaps the most difficult challenge has been her parent’s divorce. “I am most proud of how I handled what I went through and still maintained a personal life and excelled at sports”. She describes her dad as her “best friend” and this made not seeing him all the time difficult. However, it is clear that she is not only tough physically but that she has the mental fortitude to overcome the challenges that come her way.
Alexis advises that everyone should “stay on top of their academics and get help when you need it”. After high school, she plans to attend La Sierra University to play softball. Being a senior means that she has thrown the football for the last time. However, we are all excited to see how she will dominate the diamond during the upcoming softball season.
