Did you know that earthquakes occur almost every single day? Yes, that’s true. Every day, hundreds, if not thousands, of earthquakes, occur that are extremely weak to be sensed by humans. It is technically possible for them to occur without warning. Earthquakes are powerful natural disasters and can strike violently and abruptly, shaking the ground. Earthquakes are primarily caused by the massive amounts of energy released from the Earth’s outer layer that creates seismic waves, which essentially means that seismic waves are made by the Earth’s outer layer that travel through or over the Earth. Because of this, earthquakes can also occur when the underground rock unexpectedly separates and moves quickly along.
Furthermore, a good example of an earthquake that took place is in Taiwan. On April 3, 2024, in Hualien, Taiwan. A magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred off Taiwan’s east coast on Wednesday morning and it’s one of the largest earthquakes to hit in 25 years. Nine people were killed in this incident and several hundred were injured. This enormous earthquake was so intense that it caused landslides and buildings to fall apart. As a result, it has closed most of the straight paths leading to Hualien. Rescuers teams had to arrive in Hualien by helicopter as a means of transportation rather than by vehicle. This was due to the damaged roads that were caused by landslides.
During the earthquake incident, a giant ball stabilized a skyscraper during the 7.2 magnitude Taiwan earthquake. The skyscraper that somehow managed to survive the powerful earthquake had carried a “Damper Baby” and is famously known for the ball’s innovative design that consisted of a 728-ton damper attached almost to the top of the building where it is constructed from the 87th floor to the 92nd floor. When the Taipei 101 skyscraper experienced an earthquake. The “Damper Baby” creates a reaction force that helps prevent outside impacts or vibrations from outside. This is likely the reason why the skyscraper managed to survive the impact. Without the Damper Baby support, the skyscraper would have suffered more damage and may have collapsed. Overall, this gets further interesting and I encourage the audience to dig into more about the events involving the Taiwan earthquake and everything that happened during this catastrophic event was very fascinating.

I learned another thing today again thanks to this article, about the earth quaking each day.

Scary! It’s cool to know that there’s technology to protect skyscrapers from such big earthquakes though.
