We all know Saint Patrick’s Day is the holiday that has the most green but have we ever thought about what this holiday is and where this holiday comes from?
Saint Patrick’s Day originated on March 17th to honor the death of St. Patrick the patron of Ireland. This holiday would continue to evolve and celebrate the Irish culture with food, parades, music, and more. People often don’t know why we celebrate this holiday and usually don’t even care to know why but every holiday has a history behind it which makes us feel curious to want to learn more about it. This holiday is amazingly huge because every American especially those with Irish roots gets to celebrate it.
Saint Patrick’s Day is a holiday known for its legends and luck. It is associated with finding a four-leaf clover or the leprechaun legend. According to the legend, if a leprechaun finds you, he will grant you three wishes, or there is a leprechaun hiding gold at the end of every rainbow. Leprechauns are an important part of Ireland’s history and culture, and their existence comes from old Irish fables. This is why they are associated with Saint Patrick’s Day
I took the time to interview one of our students here at South El Monte to ask them a few questions about this holiday. I first introduced myself and started the conversation by asking if they thought Saint Patrick’s Day was a worthwhile holiday to celebrate she then stated, “I’m not sure if it is a worthy holiday for me to celebrate but it might be to other people. I feel like it’s not as talked about as much to know what it is unlike Christmas, Halloween, etc so I am 50/50 on it but if I had to choose between yes or no I would say no it is not.” This response brings us to think that we don’t hear much about it because we don’t come from a culture that truly celebrates it. However, we can still keep our respects to it and the people who enjoy celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day.
It’s interesting to learn more facts about holidays that aren’t discussed as much as others. I hope by reading this article you learned a few small things even if you agreed or disagreed with the opinion that was shared, I think that every holiday has unique stories and different ways to celebrate them which makes them even more interesting to learn about.
