With Spring right around the corner comes a new Track and Field season for South El Monte High School. Pre season training had started in mid January with a number of athletes showing up to practices to get ready for the season. Many returners from the previous season were looking forward to getting better at their events and have hopes of making it to Finals this 2023 Season.

Roderick Martinez, a returning Sophomore, is looking forward to competing in the Pole Vault and Long Jump events, “I want to get better at my Long Jump. They just started the Pole Vault events here so I want to try it out.” Alexander Ramos, a returning Junior, hopes to improve his times from last year which were 12.01 in the 100 meter and 23.4 in the 200 meter dash stated, “I feel like I improved from last year, but I still need to work out a little more to get faster.”

There are many new faces at the track team too. Nathan Mendoza, a Varsity football player at South El Monte, joined the track team in hopes of getting faster for his other sports. “I’m joining track just to get faster for football, but I don’t know it also seemed fun cause a lot of my friends are joining too,” Nathan said. Dylan Munoz, another junior at South El Monte High School expressed, “I wanted a way to stay in shape before football season starts up again, and I saw track was starting so I decided to go. It’s been fun and I’m looking forward to our season.”

The South El Monte Eagle track athletes are all eager to put in the hard work that will be needed to have a successful 2023 season. The Eagles are planning to have their first track meet against Montebello on March 2, so make sure to show support for your Eagles track athletes this year.
