Eagles Make Playoffs after 5 Years

On Friday November 4, 2022 the South El Monte Eagles hosted the Basset Olympians in a CIF playoff game. The Eagles coming off of a strong win against Mountain View their previous week were feeling confident. Was this enough for them to secure this win?

The game started at 6:48 with South El Monte kicking off to Basset. Basset, looking to pass the ball against the Eagles, did not seem to work in their first offensive drive getting held to a 4th down and forced to punt. The Eagles came out on their first offensive drive and scored an 82 yard touchdown pass to Christopher Vasquez. Basset does not leave this unanswered, throwing a 60 yard touchdown pass tying the game (7-7).

The second quarter started with the Eagles having possession of the ball and driving it down the Bassets 1 yard line where they threw a quick pass to Tony Aguillar III for another Eagles touchdown putting them in the lead 14 to 7. Both teams go back and forth stopping each other until Basset gets a good drive on South El Monte and gets the ball to the Eagles 3 yard line. With under a minute left in the second quarter, Basset ran the ball resulting in a touchdown ending the first half with the score 14-14.

The third quarter is when everything seemed to go downhill for the Eagles, they received the ball and was stopped by Bassets defense and were forced to punt. Basset capitalized on the opportunity and received the ball scoring another rushing touchdown putting them up 21 to 14 with 2 minutes to go in the third quarter. With under 2 minutes left in the third quarter, the Eagles fumbled the ball and Basset recovered it. Basset then goes on to throw a 30 yard touchdown ending the third quarter with a two touchdown lead. Scoreboard 28 to 14 in favor of Basset.

The fourth quarter went no better for the Eagles with them not being able to establish a good offensive drive, and struggling to stop Basset’s offense. Basset with 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter, scored their final rushing touchdown leaving the score 34-14 with the Eagles down. The Eagles had no luck scoring against Basset for the remaining time, and the game ended with the Eagles being defeated by the Basset Olympians 34-14, this marking the end to the 2022 Eagles football season.
